Our Friday is shaping up to be a rather chilly one here in Boston. In fact, after a morning start with temperatures in the 20s and 30s, high temperatures will only reach the mid 40s. Wind gusts at 20-25 mph from the northwest will make it feel like the 30s this afternoon. Bundle up. We’ll see a mix of sun and clouds today.
Tracking rain in Greater Boston, southern New England
Then, as we push through the weekend, even more changes move in. Saturday will start dry, but by Saturday night, all bets are off. Why you ask? Well, a frontal system from the west will slide toward New England, spreading scattered rain over the Greater Boston area. Pockets of heavy rain are possible. The rain will continue overnight Saturday into Sunday morning, likely exiting the region around sunrise. We could see between a quarter to one half inch of rain. No severe weather is expected.
This will be a rain event for much of the Commonwealth, including for Boston, as temperatures rise from the mid 40s on Saturday into the low to mid 50s on Sunday.
Snow, freezing rain possible in parts of Vermont and New Hampshire
If you’re looking for some wintry weather this weekend, you’ll have to travel north. But we’re not just talking snow! Parts of Vermont and New Hampshire, in fact, could see periods of freezing rain late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Some models are calling for a tenth of an inch of ice or higher in parts of the region early on during the event.
Then, the precipitation will likely changeover to snow in the higher elevations as the storm system swings into Maine through the morning on Sunday. Some snow accumulations are possible in the higher elevations of New Hampshire into northern Maine. But ice could be a bigger problem than snow this weekend in northern New England, producing slick roads through the mountains. Stay tuned for updates.
By Monday, Boston will have temperatures back in the mid 40s. It will be a blustery, chilly day with west winds gusting up to 30 mph.
