An inmate at the South Bay house of correction died hours after he became unresponsive Sunday night following a fight with corrections officers at the facility, according to the Suffolk sheriff’s office.
The incident occurred at about 8:40 p.m., according to that agency. That’s when Shacoby Kenny, 32, started to exhibit “erratic behavior” and attacked staff members, a spokesperson for the department said in a prepared statement. Kenny then began running around the facility in an attempt to evade capture, according to the sheriff’s office.
Eventually, officers were able to apprehend and restrain Kenny. Shortly thereafter, he became unresponsive, the Suffolk sheriff’s office said. Staff started lifesaving measures that included CPR, according to the sheriff’s office.
A short time later, Boston paramedics arrived to the scene and took Kenny to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead Monday morning.
Kenny had been held at the Suffolk County Jail, often referred to as Nashua Street, and the Suffolk County House of Correction, which is also known as South Bay, since Feb. 13 of this year. Both facilities are managed by the Suffolk sheriff’s department.
Kenny had faced multiple counts of assault, including assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery on a person over the age of 65, the sheriff’s office said.
In July, he had a nearly 3-week stint at Bridgewater State Hospital, a medium-security facility that houses pre-trial detainees awaiting competency and criminal responsibility evaluations by the court.
The sheriff’s office, along with Boston police, is investigating.
