The Today FM star shared his cancer diagnosis, which comes just two years after he suffered a brain haemorrhage, telling his followers ‘Men can get breast cancer too’
Today FM’s Dec Pierce has revealed he has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
The DJ who runs the popular Block Rockin’ Beats is facing the diagnosis just two years after suffering a brain haemorrhage.
Taking to Instagram to share the news with his followers, he revealed he was taking the journey, ‘one step at a time’, but wanted to share his diagnosis to raise awareness that ‘men can get breast cancer too‘ and urged other men to be mindful of any symptoms and seek help.
Posting on the social media app, he wrote: “Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. After the brain haemorrhage two years ago, it’s not something I ever thought I’d be facing – but here we are, and I’m taking it one step at a time.
“I’ve already had two surgeries at the Mater Private and am today focusing on recovery and the next stage of treatment. I want to give my deepest thanks to the amazing medical teams who’ve looked after me, and to my family and friends for their love, strength, and support. I couldn’t do this without them.
He added: “I also want to say a huge thank you to my bandmates, crew, manager and everyone at Today FM for standing by me and keeping everything moving while I focus on getting well. Your support means the world.
He went on to say he felt sharing his diagnosis was particular important for other men, explaining: “I’m sharing this because it’s important to know that men can get breast cancer too. If you notice any changes – a lump, pain, swelling, or anything that doesn’t feel right – please get it checked. Early diagnosis really does make a difference”.
He finished by saying that his upcoming gigs would go ahead as planned, admitting he found the track, ‘healing’.
“This journey has been tough, but I’ve come back before and I’ll come back stronger again.
“track is healing, and that will never change. Cancer cannot beat me. The gigs will remain unchanged – I’ll see you all next month and well into 2026. Thank you for all your support. It means more than I can ever say.”
Friends and followers, rushed to show their support for the DJ, with Dr Ciara Kelly writing: “Sending so much love & such an important message to put out there … thank you for sharing.”
With Erica Cody writing, “Sending all the love and wishing you a speedy recovery Dec”.
Male breast cancer is rare, however everyone has some breast tissue behind the nipple. As a result men can get breast cancer too.
The treatment options are the same, whatever your sex. The best treatment depends on things like the type of tumour, the stage of your cancer and your general health.
About 30 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Ireland according to the Irish Cancer Society, the figure for women is about 3,600 each year.
The radio star also suffered a health scare in 2023, after he was hospitalised from a brain haemorrhage that occurred while he was out running. Dec spoke about the terrifying ordeal at the time, describing the moment it happened as being “like a bomb going off in my head, an actual explosion.”
He was put into critical care in Beaumont Hospital and was there for two weeks, but made a miraculous recovery and the then 40-year-old bounced back to presenting his radio shows shortly after.
