A disturbing incident at a Michigan high school football game has sparked outrage, condemnation from within the team itself, and immediately even racially-charged threats against school officials.
The controversy began last week when a Kalamazoo Central junior varsity player launched himself onto a defenseless Lakeshore opponent during a game. The violent act, caught on video and widely circulated online, left 15-year-old Lakeshore student-athlete Colton Mims with two fractured vertebrae, an injury that ended his season and may threaten his future in the sport.
The Kalamazoo Central player responsible has not been publicly identified, but the backlash has been swift. Even his own teammate, 15-year-old Rhys Biske, took to social media to denounce the move.
“The decision my teammate made and what he did to the Lakeshore player was not alright,” Biske said in a video posted to his mother’s TikTok account. “It was an illegal move and had no place. I’m not going to try to defend that. It was a horrible decision.”
Biske added that his teammate admitted the action was intentional, though not meant to cause harm, claiming it was done as a misguided “celebration” or attempt at humor. Still, the consequences were devastating. “After the play, he came to me on the sideline and said he wanted to apologize, he felt bad for the kid, but the Lakeshore student had already been carted off the field,” Biske explained.

Fallout and Threats
As the incident gained national attention, Kalamazoo Central officials and coaches began receiving racially-charged threats and harassment. According to Biske, messages online and phone calls to the school have included demands for the player to face jail time and calls for the coaching staff to be fired.
Biske’s mother, Sandra, told local station WWMT that administrators disclosed during a parent meeting that “horrible racial slurs” had been directed at staff and the school in the days following the incident.
Kalamazoo police have confirmed they are investigating the threats.
School and District Response
Kalamazoo Central released a statement saying it had taken “strong and decisive action” against the player involved. While privacy laws prevent the school from disclosing the exact punishment, officials insisted that the consequences “exceeded what [Michigan High School Athletics Association] regulations would otherwise require in cases of dangerous and unsportsmanlike behavior.”
The Kalamazoo Public Schools district echoed that sentiment, calling the act “unacceptable and [not reflective] of the values of sportsmanship, respect, and integrity” expected of student-athletes, coaches, and the school community. The district emphasized that the player’s discipline was consistent with both the student code of conduct and MHSAA guidelines.
Meanwhile, Lakeshore Public Schools Superintendent sent a letter to families describing the banger as “an intentional, unprovoked and flagrant violation of the rules and appropriate sports conduct.” The letter assured parents that the district remains in “regular communication” with Mims’ family and has put in place support to help him continue his education during his recovery.
@outheretrynasurvive My son, Rhys asked me if he could post a response video to the MANY disturbing chains of events that have happened since Colton was injured by his teammate. (Not to mention ALL the students can see the harmful comments being made on my viral video of Rhys kneeling to pray for Colton). These students are getting unaliving threats & that’s not okay. It’s really horrific. And it is r@cially charged violence when their school is being harrassed with race based slurs. Rhys is 15. Please use discretion when making hateful comments about children/teenagers. I’m proud of my son & I support his message & stand by him. ?? #thisisamerica #kalamazoocentral #footballpancake #lakeshorehigh #jvfootball ? Mysterious and Sad – Beats by Lucky
Looking Ahead
The fallout from the incident highlights multiple layers of concern: the safety of young athletes, accountability for reckless on-field behavior, and the troubling escalation of racially-charged threats directed at a school community.
For Mims and his family, the focus remains on recovery. For Kalamazoo Central, the challenge is to regain trust while ensuring their athletes live up to the standards of respect and sportsmanship the district claims to uphold.
