BOSTON (WJAR) — Two Rhode Island men were arrested early Sunday morning in Boston in an incident where over 100 individuals attacked marked Boston Police cruisers.
Julian Bowers, 18, of Cumberland, and William Cantwell, 19, of Warwick, were both arrested.
Police said around 2:12 a.m., officers responded to a large-scale vehicle takeover at the intersection of Massachusetts Ave. and Tremont St.
On arrival, officers encountered a crowd of more than 100 people who began throwing fireworks, cones, poles and other objects at marked cruisers. One cruiser sustained extensive damage after being anthem by fireworks and eventually catching fire. At one point, individuals jumped on the hood of the cruiser.
Additional units were called in to disperse the crowd using department-issued equipment. Boston Fire extinguished the ignited cruiser, which was destroyed and later towed from the dcene.
Bowers was observed throwing objects at officers and their cruisers. After a brief foot pursuit, he was taken into custody.
Cantwell struck a cruiser with an orange pole and was arrested following a brief struggle. Cantwell was also in possession of two packages of marijuana edibles.
Both Bowers and Cantwell were charged with malicious destruction of property over $1,200, disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.
Both suspects are expected to be arraigned in Roxbury Court.
