
Hurricane Erin won’t make landfall along the Massachusetts coastline, but you can already see the impacts.
Nantucket’s Emergency Management Office already sent out a warning for the hazardous conditions along the beach. And South Shore beaches are closed because of riptides and dangerous rip currents.
By today, surf is expected to reach between 20-25 feet and wind gusts of 25-35 mph are expected.

“We’re going to a house,” one resident said. “We just tied up the boat pretty good. I don’t think it’s gonna be as bad as everyone thinks it is.”
Beaches are expected to be closed all day as those hazardous winds continue.
“This is like a winter storm here and it’s not even very windy yet,” one local resident said.
“They are unbelievable. I mean I’ve been here for a couple of hurricanes and I’ve really never seen anything like this before,” another said.
After a relatively calm summer here on Nantucket, locals came out yesterday to series the waves. One surfer even took on the swells.

“I’m looking for a good paddle out spot and where I might be sitting waiting for something,” a surfer named Jon said.
Though no major impacts are expected, there are still some concerns about erosion along the beaches and flooding on the island.
