Boots is closing in on Monster: The Ed Gein Story on last week’s Netflix English TV rankings.
The dramedy based on Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, and created by Andy Parker, managed 9.4M views during its first full week on the streamer from October 13 to 19, doubling its total from the week prior. It came in a close second to Ryan Murphy‘s The Ed Gein Story, which is down week-over-week with 9.5M views.
An unexpected set of circumstances set the stage for Boots, which is otherwise relatively modest and unknown compared to the titles bookending it, to make its mark on the leading 10 after premiering on October 9. The series is based on a true story about a gay teenager who enlists in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1990 for reprieve from his home life only to have to hide his sexuality in an environment where being openly gay was illegal.
In addition to a somewhat underwhelming performance from both The Ed Gein Story and The Diplomat, Boots gained much more attention once the Pentagon weighed in on the series, calling it “woke garbage.”
No. 1 The Ed Gein Story saw a 54% decrease in viewership in its second full week on Netflix. The third installment in Murphy’s killer franchise has performed interestingly in its debut month.
After debuting ahead of its predecessor Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the third season put up a performance that was on par with the second installment in its first full week on the streamer. Last week, however, it seems The Ed Gein Story fell a bit further than The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story in the same time frame. It is about 27% below the second full week of viewing for Season 2, which came in at 13.1M views.
To make matters even more peculiar, the third season of The Diplomat is also off to a bit of a slower start. In its opening weekend, Season 3 was good for 4.8M views, putting it in third place for the week and slightly down from Season 2’s 5.6M views in the same time frame.
There is certainly room for growth, though The Diplomat typically tends to attract a steady and solid (albeit lower) audience over several weeks post-premiere rather than seeing huge viewership spikes like some other titles. For example, Season 2 was down to 3.3M views in its third week (or, second full week) on the platform. So, it would be surprising to see the series take off much beyond its current performance, but we can expect it to likely stick around the leading 10 in some fashion for several more weeks.
Victoria Beckham and Wayward rounded out the leading five spots with 3.8M and 3.2M views, respectively.
On the film side of things, The Woman in Cabin 10 raked in an impressive 30.1M views. The Perfect Neighbor, the new documentary detailing the consequences of Florida’s Stand Your Ground laws, tallied 16.7M views in just a few days on Netflix after premiering on October 17.
Unsurprisingly, Kpop Demon Hunters is still going strong, taking third place with 16.2M views.
