The U.S. Department of Justice released a list of 35 “sanctuary jurisdictions” on Tuesday, including Boston among the cities, counties and states it plans to target for having policies they say impede the enforcement of federal immigration laws.
“Sanctuary policies impede law enforcement and put American citizens at risk by design,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. “The Department of Justice will continue bringing litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies around the country.”
In addition to Boston, the list includes three New England states — Connecticut, Rhode Island and Vermont.
Four of the 13 states included on the list — California, New York, Colorado and Illinois, have already been sued by the federal government over their immigration policies.
The list was released in response to an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in April. The Justice Department also released its criteria for inclusion on the list, and said it will be updated as federal authorities gather additional information. They also said they will work with any jurisdiction that wants to be removed from the list to “identify and eliminate their sanctuary policies, so they no longer stand in opposition to federal immigration enforcement.”
