The award for the explanatory category, meanwhile, went to Lev Facher, a reporter at STAT, Boston Globe Media’s health and science publication, covering addiction. Facher won for “The War on Recovery,” a package focused on the failure in the US to properly distribute the medications methadone and buprenorphin to people addicted to opioids.
“Boston Globe Media is immensely proud of STAT and The Boston Globe for their wins at the 2025 Loeb Awards,” Boston Globe Media president Dhiraj Nayar said in a statement. “These honors underscore our commitment to impactful journalism that informs and inspires change.”
Nayar added that both projects “exemplify the power of high-quality investigative reporting in shedding light on critical issues that impact business and finance.”
The Globe’s Steward coverage was also a Loeb finalist in the beat reporting category, as was STAT’s “Health Care’s Colossus” series about the dominance of UnitedHealth Group. STAT was also a finalist in the commentary category, for work by biotech columnist Adam Feuerstein.
The Steward investigation has also won a Scripps Howard Journalism Award for excellence in business/financial reporting, and was a 2025 Pulitzer Prize finalist in the public service category.
The last time the Globe won a Loeb Award, which are presented by the UCLA Anderson School of Management, was in 2007, for commentary by longtime columnist Steve Bailey. STAT won a Loeb last year, as well as in 2018.
