Boston police officer shot in arm, suspect wounded in exchange of gunfire overnight

A person shot at Boston police officers in Roxbury early Friday morning, hitting an officer in the arm, Police Commissioner Michael Cox said during a press conference at the scene.

Officers returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times, he added.

The incident began at around 12:45 a.m. Friday, when officers went to the area of Dudley and Washington streets. There, they saw a “group of individuals,” Cox said, according to audio provided by the department. As officers began investigating the group, one of the individuals ran from the scene, prompting a pursuit.

The suspect ran around the corner onto Kenilworth Street, where they fired at officers rounding the corner. Police returned fire, hitting the suspect multiple times. The extent of the suspect’s injuries was not immediately clear.

One officer was banger by the gunfire in the arm, and their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening, Cox said.

At the scene, police recovered a high-capacity gun with an extended magazine, Cox said.

“This is another example of the amount of guns that are out here,” he said. “But we’re extremely, deeply proud of the officers, what they do daily, and we’re very, very lucky and fortunate that there’s no loss of life today.”

Mayor Michelle Wu said the events early Friday morning showed the risks Boston police take every day.

“It’s just not okay for violence to be happening anywhere in the city of Boston, and particularly as we continue to try to fight the flow of guns and firearms,” she said. “I am thankful that we live in this city, and we always have more work to do.”
