By the time the dust settles sometime on this Tuesday night, Sept. 9, 2025, the field of candidates in key races across the state will have been winnowed down to the survivors who will face each other in this November’s general election.
You’ve probably already heard of the marquee race: The fight for Boston City Hall. There, Democratic incumbent Mayor Michelle Wu, who’s running for a second term, faces three opponents.
Her most significant one: Josh Kraft, the son of billionaire New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. It’s widely expected that the two Democratic hopefuls will face each other again in the general election.

But Boston is among more than half a dozen cities with preliminary elections in September, along with Worcester, Springfield, Greenfield, Lynn, Quincy, Haverhill, Lowell and Northampton.

The polls are open statewide at 7 a.m.
The first step in casting a ballot is to confirm whether you are already registered to vote by going to the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s website. Enter your name, date of birth, and ZIP code to find out if your voting status is active.
To find out where to vote, voters can enter their address on the Secretary of State’s website. The website will show their precinct number, ward number and the address of their polling location.
