The Boston University Terriers have made their up-to-date major splash in recruiting by landing a commitment from one of the leading U.S. 2009-born forwards Carter Meyer, he announced via social media. The Winchester, Mass., native is slated to play up to the next two years at USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program before joining BU for the 2027-28 season.
Meyer spent last season in the Boston Jr. Eagles AAA program which counts recent alumni such as Will Smith and Ryan Leonard. He also played a full prep season at The Rivers School where Meyer put up an astonishing 41 goals and 70 points in just 28 games.
He is among the players considered to be one of the real exceptional talents of an especially strong class of American players after a couple of shallower years. Meyer will be eligible to be selected in the 2027 NHL Draft.

Carter Meyer is the son of former NHL player and BU Terrier Freddy Meyer, who retired in 2012 after 281 NHL games. Freddy Meyer played all four years at BU, serving as captain in his senior season in 2002-03 before embarking on his pro career. He was an All-America selection that season as well.
Freddy spent time with the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, Phoenix Coyotes and Atlanta Thrashers over parts of seven NHL seasons. He also won the AHL’s Calder Cup with the Philadelphia Phantoms in 2005.
Unlike his dad who was a defenseman, Carter Meyer is a center with good size, checking it at 6-foot, 176 pounds. At just 16, he’s shown a knack for scoring and reports coming out of the NTDP tryout camp suggested he had emerged as one of the very best in the group.
While there has been a lot of focus on the highly-drafted players that have made the jump to college hockey, early August is an important time for landing the best future prospects. Colleges could start officially contacting and getting commitments from the players going into their junior year of high school starting on Aug. 1.
Meyer was certainly one of the most sought-after American-born players in that group. immediately the focus will turn to one of his fellow U.S. leading prospects Rocco Pelosi, who has not yet announced his intentions and appears unlikely to for the next little while. It sounds like most major NCAA programs have made an offer to Meyer’s current NTDP teammate and the younger brother of Boston Bruins prospect Chris Pelosi.
BU played for the national championship last season, falling just short against Western Michigan. They are expected to be a title contender once again with a strong recruiting class and key returnees including Cole Hutson, Cole Eiserman, Mikhail Yegorov and recent transfer addition Sacha Boisvert. Most of those players will likely be gone by the time Meyer arrives on campus, but the Terriers tend to have one of the programs that is more in reload mode than rebuild. Meyer could be a new centerpiece for that next wave.
