There aren’t any known victims or concerns about public safety risk at this time, a spokesman for Cambridge police said.
Harvard University briefly implemented a shelter-in-place order Friday morning while police searched for a suspect on a bicycle who allegedly shot at another person in Cambridge.
“Cambridge Police are currently on-scene of a shots fired incident that took place on Sherman Street in the vicinity of Danehy Park,” a spokesman for Cambridge police initially told Boston.com via email. “Ballistic evidence has been recovered.”
There aren’t any known victims or concerns about public safety risk at this time, the spokesman confirmed.
In an update shared with Boston.com via email Friday afternoon, police noted that 911 reports came in just before 11 a.m. regarding multiple gunshots on Sherman Street.
A preliminary investigation indicates that two or three people, at least one of whom may have been on a bike, had an altercation in the roadway, according to police. At least one person allegedly fired multiple gunshots at another person.
Police said all parties fled the scene before authorities arrived and they are not believed to be in the area anymore.
“Out of an abundance of caution, Harvard University issued a shelter-in-place and notifications were made to nearby schools and places of interest,” the spokesman noted. “Available evidence suggests that this was an isolated incident with those directly involved, there is no on-going public safety risk to the broader community. Sherman St. and several surrounding roadways were closed while CPD Detectives processed the scene. All roadways have since re-opened.”
Cambridge police also released photos of a person of interest in the incident. Authorities clarified that this person is not wanted at this time, but detectives would like to speak with them.
They ask that anyone with information reach out to Cambridge detectives at 617-349-3121. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online.
Harvard issued multiple emergency alerts to the community before noon, warning that university and Cambridge police had been searching for the suspect near the Radcliffe Quad.
By noon, the university had lifted the shelter in place.
“Please continue to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the HUPD at 617-495-1212,” a Harvard alert noted.
