Claressa Shields has been itching to fight retired boxing legend, Laila Ali, the daughter of late boxing icon, Muhammad Ali, and even raised the $15 million Ali says she would need to step back into the ring.
However, Shields revealed that Ali’s team has reportedly declined the multi-million dollar offer to fight.
“Layla and her representatives have told us no. Like, the answer is ‘no.’ She doesn’t want to fight. And that’s fine. I have no problem with that. I’m not upset. I mean, I wouldn’t fight me either. You know what I’m saying? I understand that she’s scared. I’m moving on,” Shields told TMZ.
“I thought that she was about all that talk. She wanted $15 million. I went and got the $15 million. And today it’s all this backpedaling. So, you know, congrats to her on whatever she’s doing. But I’m moving on with my career.”
Just days prior, Ali posted a video to social media, claiming that she would not be rushed into any decision.
“today to answer the question that I know many of you who are poking around, waiting for me to give you an answer, the answer is yes,” Ali said. “I’m going to answer your question when I’m good and ready to do it. Because you know what? Nobody calls shots on me. I do things when, how and where I like to do them.”
