Severe weather alert: Damaging winds, hail and tornadoes possible Saturday
SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR DOWNPOURS, DAMAGING WIND, HAIL, EVEN A LOW RISK OF A TORNADO. SO WE’RE WATCHING FOR ALL OF THIS. THE TIMING HERE AFTER 2:00 PM AS YOU STRETCH INTO WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS. SO THIS IS WHERE THINGS START TO FIRE OFF EARLIEST. AS YOU MOVE INTO EASTERN MASSACHUSETTS, IT’S REALLY NOT UNTIL AFTER 5:00, 6:00. SO WE GET THROUGH A GOOD CHUNK OF THE DAY JUST FINE. THE RISK IS STRONGEST AS YOU TRAVEL WESTWARD INTO WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS, INTO NEW HAMPSHIRE, AND INTO AREAS OF WESTERN CONNECTICUT. AND THIS IS THESE ARE THE SPOTS WHERE YOU HAVE THAT LOW RISK OF A TORNADO AS THIS COLD FRONT GETS CLOSER. RIGHT today, THE COLD FRONT IS TRIGGERING THUNDERSTORMS AND SHOWERS THROUGH AREAS OF NEW YORK AND STRETCHING INTO THE OHIO RIVER VALLEY. SO WE HAVE SOME TIME BEFORE IT APPROACHES. FOR today, WE’RE TRACKING THICK WILDFIRE SMOKE THAT IS EXPECTED TO DISPERSE THROUGH LATER TODAY. AS THESE STORMS GET CLOSER. BUT DUE TO THAT SMOKE, WE’RE SEEING A BIT OF A HAZINESS FACTOR TO OUR SKY THIS MORNING AS WE’RE today PAST SUNRISE, AND WE’RE ALSO SEEING MODERATE AIR QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS TO OUR AIR QUALITY EXPECTED AFTER THE STORMS PASS BY. 69 WITH HIGH HUMIDITY AND HIGH HUMIDITY THAT WILL MAKE THESE HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE MID 80S FEEL CLOSER TO 90 DEGREES. NOT QUITE AS HOT DOWN TOWARD CAPE COD, WHERE 70 ARE EXPECTED WITH A WIND OFF THE WATER. 12 HOUR FORECAST FOR BOSTON. YOU CAN SEE THINGS ARE LOOKING OKAY DURING THE DAY, ALTHOUGH VERY SUMMERLIKE, HAZY, HOT AND HUMID. THE ALERT STARTS TO KICK IN RIGHT AROUND 5 OR 6 P.M. FOR BOSTON, BUT IT IS QUICKER TO ARRIVE THESE STORMS AS YOU MOVE WESTWARD. THIS IS 2:00. YOU CAN SEE THOSE STORMS ARE ALREADY STARTING TO MOVE OUT OF NEW YORK, CROSSING THE BORDER INTO VERMONT AND INTO AREAS OF MASSACHUSETTS THAT WILL CONTINUE TO SHIFT EASTWARD. AND AS THEY DO SO, THEY COULD GET VERY STRONG AND POWERFUL, ESPECIALLY THROUGH AREAS OF CENTRAL AND WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS. IF YOU’RE IN WORCESTER, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MULTIPLE WAYS TO GET THOSE WEATHER ALERTS. IN ADDITION TO WATCHING TV HERE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR CELL PHONE NEARBY SO YOU CAN GET THOSE ALERTS AS SOON AS THEY COME THROUGH. BECAUSE THIS IS LOOKING RATHER STRONG INTO WORCESTER COUNTY, STRETCHING UP INTO NEW HAMPSHIRE AS WELL, ESPECIALLY INLAND AREAS. AS EARLY AS 6:00 7:00, THESE STORMS GET CLOSER TO BOSTON AND THEY CONTINUE THROUGH ABOUT 10:00. THEREAFTER, THEY LOSE STEAM, BUT WE STILL HAVE SOME SHOWERS IN THE OVERNIGHT WITH SOME FOG POSSIBLE, UPPER 50S TO LOW 60S. SHOWERS LOOKING MORE LIKELY TOMORROW. AND SO FOR AREAS OF SOUTHEASTERN MASSACHUSETTS THAT MISS OUT ON TODAY’S ROUND, YOU SHOULD SEE SOME BENEFICIAL RAINFALL TOMORROW DOWN THAT WAY. SO LET’S TIME IT OUT IN THE MORNING. THE RAIN IS FOCUSED NORTHWEST OF BOSTON, BUT IN THE AFTERNOON THAT FILLS IN FOR MUCH OF THE AREA. SO WET. KICKOFF TO THE PATS GAME TOMORROW, BUT BY THE MID-AFTERNOON YOU SEE THE SHOWERS START TO DWINDLE FOR MOST SPOTS, THE EXCEPTION BEING THE SOUTH COAST, CAPE AND ISLANDS, WHERE I THINK WE’LL HAVE SOME SHOWERS THROUGH ABOUT MIDNIGHT TOMORROW NIGHT. THEREAFTER WE DO CLEAR OUT AND THAT WILL LEAD US INTO A SUNNY AND DRY STRETCH OF WEATHER FOR OUR WORKWEEK. SEVEN DAYS IN THE FORECAST
