Delta announced the addition of flights to Madrid and Nice next spring, furthering its European reach. The announcement comes just two months after Delta added a Boston to Milan route and introduced daily flights to Barcelona.
“By adding nonstop service to Madrid and Nice, we’re enhancing our European network and continuing our commitment to providing an exceptional travel experience from start to finish,” said Paul Baldoni, senior vice president of network planning for the Atlanta-based airline.
Delta will today serve 12 European destinations from Boston. Over the past two decades, Delta has grown from offering flights from 25 to approximately 70 destinations worldwide. The flight to Nice will be the first nonstop flight from Boston to the French city. Flights to Madrid will launch on May 16, and flights to Nice will begin on May 17.
The airline has made an aggressive push to bolster its Boston presence. In addition to new European routes, the airline opened a 21,000-square-foot Sky Lounge last year in Terminal E at Logan, followed by a 6,700-square-foot Delta One Lounge, which is reserved for the airline’s customers sitting in first class, and some customers sitting in first-class or business-class seats on flights operated by Delta partners.
Delta and JetBlue have been jousting for dominance at Logan. Currently, JetBlue services 70 destinations out of Logan, while Delta also offers service to 70 destinations. The difference is that while Delta has been looking globally, JetBlue has been expanding in the US and the Caribbean, plus the gradual additions of year-round flights to London-Heathrow, and Paris, plus seasonal service to Madrid, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Dublin, and London-Gatwick.
Earlier this month, JetBlue announced it would return to Daytona Beach on Dec. 4 with year-round service and begin daily flights to Vero Beach beginning Dec. 11.
It will also enter the airport lounge battle at Logan when it opens a lounge in Terminal C later this year or early next year.
