Derrick Groves’ girlfriend may have tipped off police after an argument the day before he was captured in Atlanta.
A neighbor told a local WSB-TV reporter they heard Groves and a woman arguing the day before a SWAT team surrounded the house on Honeysuckle Lane on Wednesday.
The neighbor reportedly said the girlfriend “got mad and ratted him out.”
Officers threw gas canisters and flash bang devices into the house. Eventually they found Groves hiding in a crawl space in the basement.
Fox 8 News gave viewers a tour of the boarded up house that Groves called home for 5 months. Clothes and children’s toys were scattered on the floor of the ransacked home.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said the crawl space was constructed to conceal Groves.
The homeowner told Fox8 News he rented the house to a woman who paid her rent on time.
The owner said the woman seemed to have unlimited funds with no visible means of support. He said he didn’t run a background check on her.

Groves appeared in an Atlanta courtroom on Thursday morning. He waived extradition back to New Orleans where he escaped from a jail with 9 other inmates back in May.
He told the judge, “I want to return where I’m from.”
Groves, 27, was the last of 10 inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans on May 16.
Most of the escapees were captured within hours. But Groves managed to elude U.S. Marshals for five months. He became a hero to some who believe the American justice system is unfair to Black men.
