Diane Keaton famously never married during her acclaimed Hollywood career, though she has been linked to a number of famous faces.
Keaton, who died in October 2025 at the age of 79, had long been candid about her decision to not walk down the aisle.
“It goes back to my mother, because, for me, most everything does. I love my dad, of course … but she was always there, and he was always working,” Keaton told Interview magazine in a 2021 profile. “He was working hard, and he was really interesting. And he loved her, too. She had four kids, and I was the firstborn. I saw how much she gave up.”
She continued, “I feel like she chose family over her dreams, and she was just the best mother. I think that she is the reason why I didn’t get married. I didn’t want to give up my independence. By the way, no one has ever asked me to marry them, either, so that might be a good answer. I should’ve started with that and called it a day.”
Keaton later adopted two children, daughter Dexter and son Duke, as a single mother in her 50s.

Woody Allen

Keaton and Allen’s history goes back to the 1970s, during which it was widely speculated that Allen based the titular character of 1977’s Annie Hall on Keaton. (She also famously starred in the movie.)
“It’s not true, but there are elements of truth in it,” Keaton told The New York Times in 1977 of the rumors.
Allen and Keaton also collaborated on Play It Again, Sam and Love and Death.
While Keaton and Allen’s romance only spanned a few short years, she continued to maintain that they remained on amicable terms.
“Woody Allen is my friend and I continue to believe him,” Keaton tweeted in 2018, referring to multiple sexual misconduct accusations about the director that he’s vehemently denied.
Al Pacino

Keaton and Pacino didn’t start dating until three years after wrapping 1971’s The Godfather. They dated on and off until 1990.
“I was mad for him. Charming, hilarious, a nonstop talker,” she told People in 2017. “There was an aspect of him that was like a lost orphan, like this kind of lit idiot savant. And oh, gorgeous!”
That same year, Pacino attended Keaton’s AFI Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony. He ended a tribute speech with, “I love you forever.”
Warren Beatty

Keaton briefly dated Beatty after meeting on the set of 1981’s Reds.
“The first time I saw Warren was in Splendor in the Grass [in 1961]. I mean, come on! He was, I mean, to die for. A dream,” she told Variety in 2016. “Not only was he beautiful, gorgeous and sexy and captivating and mysterious and a great movie star but he was also an unbelievable producer and director, or is rather, is also an unbelievable director and producer. All of this is just so unique.”
