The audience was left amazed when Dylan Efron along with Daniella Karagach delivered a beautiful Rumba on one of the recent episodes of Dancing With The Stars. Viewers seemed to be more than pleased with the tech-savvy, but also very hard, routine set to “I am not that shorty” from Wicked, which the judges rated very low.

It was Efron’s performance that shone the brightest and he was the one who got the judges to think that it was rather a low score since the show was celebrating Wicked Night. Rumba is a dance that is extremely difficult for celebrities to master and it needs exaggerating the hip action, controlling the movement and connecting the emotions between partners to be done well. However, after all these technical prerequisites Efron and Karagach managed to get deep under the skin of the sensual and romantic routine which made many spectators question the judges’ scoring.
One watcher expressed the dominant feeling “Hips were splendid! Smooth weight change and tension was perfect! The way he LEADING her and not vice versa! I am sooo proud.” This remark shows the growth in the musician’s confidence and also the technical improvement, which is indeed very impressive taking into consideration the dancer’s lack of experience.
The spokesperson for the Wicked movie gave a reply that was very simple yet so meaningful, stating, “You really ARE that duo 💚” in reference to the performance. This approval by the representatives of the source material added much to the viewers’ appreciation of the interpretation.
Many viewers were left confused by the scores, one of them saying, “I really cannot understand how they ended up in the bottom 3. This was so perfect and even the judges said the Rumba is one of the hardest dances. He is getting better each week without any dance experience. They deserved more.” The same view was seen a lot in the comments section with many people pointing to the contradiction between the judges’ recognition of the dance’s difficulty and their scoring that many considered inadequate.
Another viewer gave an observation that was similar to what the others had said, “Severely underscored this was beautiful sensual romantic and technically challenging as you are completely exposed!!! He deserves some 9s!!” Many people think this was a reflection of the frustration with the scoring discrepancy between the performance’s apparent quality and the numbers displayed.
The chemistry between Efron and Karagach was also one of the main topics in the comments, with one person saying “this made me feel at the end they have unconsciously promised their endless love and attraction to each other.” Even the observer admitted Karagach’s marriage to another pro dancer Pasha Pashkov, but she still spoke of the couple’s strong emotional connection during their performance which was very convincing.
Karagach’s ability to create new and great dances was highly praised as well, with one comment saying “Daniella’s quality of movement is unmatched…she is breathtaking to series.” Another one added “Love this duo!!! Dani’s choreography is leading notch as always!” This last one refers to the professional’s creative choices that perfectly matched Efron’s growing skills.
Direct comparisons with other contestants were made by several viewers, with one saying “How do you give him 8s and Andy 7s?!?” This implies some of the audience thought there was a lack of consistency in the judges’ scoring standards for different performances in the same episode.
The large majority of the comments agreed that Efron’s performance of Rumba was both a major personal breakthrough and a skillful technical presentation that deserved more points. One comment was, “Every week he is the one who improves the most! Why is he being underscored? I don’t get it! He’s so talented.”
The controversy about the scoring did not take away the performance’s ability to put Efron in the competition’s leading position as far as a number of viewers are concerned, and numerous comments suggested he could win the whole season. One simply said “He might actually win this,” while the other one proclaimed “No doubt he is the winner!”

The strong reaction to Efron and Karagach’s rumba shows how much the audience has already connected, and they seem to be getting more and more involved in the couple’s competition journey. The question that remains is if the judges will score the same as the viewers do in the next episodes, but it is undoubtedly the case that Efron has established himself as a worthy contender who should be closely watched as the season approaches its grand finale. Gabby Windey previously partnered with Efron in dance challenges, and Olivia Efron gave her brother his first dance lessons.
