
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Boston College volleyball team (6-0, 0-0 ACC) defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks (1-4, 0-0 SEC) in a five set thriller at the first annual Showdown at the Net in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Eagles won by scores of 25-23, 16-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-12.
The Eagles posted 16 blocks and 60 kills as a team Tuesday night against Arkansas at Barnhill Arena. For the first time since 2012, in the first annual Showdown at the Net, the Eagles beat an SEC team.
Co-captains Audrey Ross and Cornelia Roach led the Eagles tonight with 12 kills each and a combined 27 combined points. Roach posted a .545% and added six blocks. Freshman Bella Ehrlich carried the team in blocks recording nine, she earned 11.5 points. Senior Anna Herrington made a statement with eight kills and seven blocks, earning 12 points. Junior Brooklyn Yelland held down fort with 13 digs, assisted by Ross with 13 digs and Moore with 12. Both sophomores, Aubrey Moore and Lucy Mott recorded a combined 33 assists and two aces each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1:
Boston College opened the scoring for the night as Ross assisted early in the attack, taking the lead. Arkansas quickly responded but with a big 5-0 run that was started by a kill from Sam Hoppes, the score evened at 19. Two kills by Herrington and Ross put them in the lead and a final effort from Ehrlich sealed the offer. The Eagles took the first set 25-23.
Set 2:
Arkansas came back fighting as they got the first points of the second set. Herrington quickly responded with a kill but the Razorbacks brought out the blocks. In their first set loss this season, the Razorbacks won the second set 25-15.
Set 3:
The Eagles came back strong in the third, Herrington and Roach blocking the Razorbacks to get the first point. Arkansas didn’t back down but neither did Audrey Ross, hitting through Arkansas blocks, tallying kills and pressuring the Razorbacks. An ace by freshman Ehrlich earned the Eagles double digits. A huge solo block from Herrington paired with kills from Ehrlich, Hoppes and Herrington had the Eagles fighting for the lead. The Razorbacks won the third set 25-23.
Set 4:
Cornelia Roach came out hard with a huge kill to get the ball moving; Ehrlich wasn’t far behind. Sets were full of blocks, preventing the Arkansas offense from scoring. Until the score evened at double digits, it was a game of back and forth, then with a four point lead, the Eagles took the lead. They shortened the Razorbacks hitting percentage to .045%, dominating in their best set of the night. The Eagles took the fourth set 25-15.
Set 5:
Building off the momentum the Eagles built in the fourth, the Eagles got on the board first, setting the tone. Back-to-back kills by Roach built on the BC lead as blocks by Ehrlich and Herrington accompanied by kills from Herrington and Ross lengthened the lead. A 4-0 kill run from Hoppes and Sequoia Layne pushed the Eagles to double digits. A block from Ehrlich and Herrington sealed the offer as the Eagles took the fifth set 15-12.
