A man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of placing an explosive at an ATM outside a bank in Woburn, Massachusetts, last month, authorities said.
Christopher Silva, of Stoneham, was taken into custody by a task force, the FBI said. He’s facing a charge of maliciously damaging property used in interstate commerce over the Sept. 4 explosion at the Eastern Bank on Mishawum Road.
No one was hurt in the blast, which Woburn police requested the help of state police and the FBI to investigate. They released surveillance images of a man in a blue face mask and goggles.
In their application for a search warrant in the case, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts cited surveillance footage from multiple locations, which let them track the suspect back toward San Jose Terrace in Stoneham, where Silva lives.
Stoneham police confirmed that the FBI was working on the street as part of a task force conducting activity authorized by a court, leading to an increase in police presence between Interstate 93 and Main Street.
Stoneham Police Chief James O’Connor said in a statement that there was no threat to the community.
It wasn’t immediately clear if Silva had an attorney who could speak to the charge.
Woburn police previously said that officers responded to the bank for a report of tampering with the machine and found damage from what appeared to be a pipe bomb or other destructive device. They determined that a man placed an object on the machine, which detonated moments after he left.
