One man is dead and another man is in police custody following an early-morning shooting in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
Jonathan Reyes-Contreras, 42, of New Jersey, was arrested Sunday in connection with a shooting around 12:15 a.m. on Mechanic Street in Fitchburg, the Worcester District Attorney’s Office said. He is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.
Police said when they arrived at the shooting scene, they found a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound outside a vehicle. He was taken to an area hospital, where he died a short time later. His name has not been released.
The district attorney’s office said their initial investigation suggests that the two men knew each other, and there is not believed to be any danger to the general public.
Reyes-Contreras is expected to be arraigned Monday in Fitchburg District Court. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had obtained an attorney.
The shooting remains under investigation by Fitchburg and state police.
