Former WBZ anchor Kate Merrill is suing the Boston station, CBS, its parent company Paramount, and four former co-workers alleging racial and gender discrimination.
Merrill started working at the CBS owned station in 2004 as a reporter. She abruptly left WBZ in 2024.
She claims the Boston station and the two companies took a “career-ending action” against her to “advance a DEI agenda,” short for diversity, equity and inclusion. She claims she was discriminated against on the basis of her race and gender. Paramount opened an investigation into her conduct after two Black coworkers raised separate complaints about her.
Merrill is seeking a jury trial and $4 million in damages, according to the online court records.
Merrill alleges that her move from co-anchor of the morning show to weekend nights was “to make an example of her.” She said she feared the demotion would cause “catastrophic damage” to her career, so she resigned on May 24, 2024.
We asked CBS for comment and will update when we hear back.
