Former Red Sox MVP and Dodgers star Mookie Betts was named the 2025 Roberto Clemente Award winner.
The award recognizes “the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions on and off the field.”
Betts is the founder of the 5050 Foundation.
“We do a lot. Mostly giving to the underserved community,” Betts said on MLB Network before Game 3 of the World Series. “We want to teach about finances, about health, mental and physical health. And really we just want to create opportunities, give goods to people who deserve it, that don’t have it.
“Sometimes there’s (future) big leaguers around underserved communities that just need an opportunity,” he added. “We want to give them an opportunity but also for life. And I think that’s what we care about is really just creating something that they can sustain for the rest of their lives.”
The 33-year-old Betts, who is the fourth Dodgers player ever to win the award, won the AL MVP with the Red Sox in 2018 while also finishing in second place once (2016) during his six years in Boston.
He has been the NL MVP runner-up twice with the Dodgers (2020, ‘23).
The eight-time All-Star is trying to become the only active player with four World Series rings. The Dodgers and Blue Jays are tied 1-1 heading into Game 3 at 8 p.m. Monday.
Betts had a down year in 2025; his .732 OPS was 149 points below his career mark (.881). But he still finished with a 3.4 fWAR in part because he played excellent defense at shortstop where he’s an NL Gold Glove finalist.
