Abbey Murphy and the No. 3 Gophers women’s hockey team continued their strong starts to the season with a 5-0 victory over host Boston University on Friday.
The Gophers improved to 3-0 on the season, while BU lost its season opener. The Gophers outscored Boston College 18-1 in a sweep of their season-opening series last weekend.
“A good win on the road,” Gophers coach Brad Frost said. “Our start wasn’t great. Credit BU, they came out on leading of their game. Some big saves by [Hannah] Clark, great shutout overall. We found our game as we went. Proud of our group.”
Murphy, who had nine points last weekend to become the 11th player in program history to reach 200 career points, had two goals and assist on Friday to increase her career total to 207 points. She is ninth on the Gophers’ career list, two points behind Grace Zumwinkle.
She opened the scoring on Friday with a power-play goal with with 7 minutes, 2 seconds left in the first period. Nelli Laitinen extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal.
Freshman Bella Fanale, who had three goals and three assists, last weekend, scored on an assist from Murphy to make it 3-0 early in the third period. Madison Kaiser and Murphy scored in the final four minutes to make it 5-0.
The Gophers outshot the Terriers 49-24 — 36-14 in the final two periods — and got a lift from the penalty-kill unit. The Gophers skated off a BU power-play while leading 1-0 and killed two while leading 2-0.
Clark made 24 saves in the shutout. The teams conclude the series on Saturday afternoon.
