- A wedding guest recalled on Reddit how a groomsman gave a shocking speech revealing that the bride was the groom’s second choice
- The groomsman detailed how the couple met, sharing that the groom was romantically shut down by his colleague, so he “hooked up with the bride to console himself”
- This wedding toast “irked” partygoers, and upset many Redditors
A groomsman dropped a major bombshell during his wedding toast.
One of the wedding guests recalled the shocking speech in a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum. The individual remembered the celebration being “nice” then taking a turn at the reception, where the groom’s friend picked up the microphone and said something he probably shouldn’t have.
“I could not see the couple’s faces during the speech, but let’s just say the applause was half-hearted at best,” the wedding guest wrote.

From start to finish, the speech “irked” many of the partygoers.
“He started by saying he would tell us the story of how the groom and the bride met, and we thought that it would be pretty sweet. It wasn’t,” the Redditor recalled.
Rather than sharing a sweet meet-cute story, the groomsman revealed one of the “worst” things — that the groom was actually trying “in vain to pursue another colleague” during a business trip and only settled for the bride because his original object of affection was “not interested.”
“He hooked up with the bride to console himself,” the wedding guest remembered the groomsman telling everyone.
The groomsman added “with pride” that he had suggested to the groom at the time: “Worst case scenario, you can always try your luck with [bride’s name].”

Like the wedding guests, Reddit users were appalled by the speech. Some Redditors speculated that the bride secretly “hates” the groomsman, or vice versa.
“To say he was raised in a barn is an insult to barns,” the leading comment reads.
Many users on the platform argued that there’s a time and place to make jokes, and that a wedding usually isn’t one of them.
“A lot of dudes think the best man speech is an opportunity to be a comedian, and it is almost never funny,” one person said, with another individual commenting, “If a bridal event speech was memorable, it’s always for terrible reasons.”
