Police in Haverhill, Massachusetts, are grieving the loss of one of their own.
Police Chief Robert Pistone Jr. said in a Facebook post on Saturday that he was profoundly sad to announce the death of a beloved Haverhill officer, who served the community with grace, compassion, kindness and professionalism.
She will be deeply missed, he added, noting that the department will not be releasing the officer’s name out of respect for her family and their privacy.
The chief of police went on to extend his deepest and heartfelt condolences to them, as well as the men and women of the Haverhill Police Department.
He added that the department is grateful to the community for their support, and to the many local police departments, as well as Massachusetts State Police and the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, who have stepped in to assist with shift coverage over the last 24 hours.
Several police departments, including Beverly, Melrose, Amesbury, and Carlisle, expressed their condolences to the Haverhill Police Department on social media.
As is the case with all unattended deaths, Pistone Jr. said the officer’s death will be investigated by the Essex County District Attorney’s Office. Foul play is not suspected.
The cause of death remains unknown pending an autopsy by the medical examiner’s office.
Further details were not immediately available.
