Brian McKnight will not perform at Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
The embattled R&B singer, 56, was scheduled to perform at the HBCU’s 31st Presidential Scholarship Gala. But his concert was canceled after intense backlash from students and board members.
According to Complex, the school announced the cancellation on social media.
Claflin University President Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack wrote:
“Claflin University values and respects the perspectives of our constituents and stakeholders. We take your concerns regarding the creator for the Scholarship Gala seriously and are currently exploring options. Thank you for your loyal and continued support as we work to ensure this event is a beacon of light for our institution while raising needed funds to support student scholarships.”
McKnight released his self-titled debut album in 1992. The album went platinum and spawned the anthem songs “The Way Love Goes” (1992) and “One Last Cry” (1993).
More hits followed throughout his career including “On the Down Low” (1995), “Still in Love” (1995), “You Should Be Mine (Don’t Waste Your Time)” (1997), “Anytime” (1997), “Back at One” (1999), and “Love of My Life” (2001).
McKnight received 16 Grammy nominations without a win (second only to Snoop Dogg).
