Political tension has grown between the U.S. and Canada due to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, but that has not stopped the annual dory races.
It’s a series of rowing races between Gloucester, Massachusetts, and its Canadian sister city Lunenburg, and it brings an opportunity to highlight the neighboring countries’ historic bond.
NBC10 Boston was at the leg of the race that took part in Massachusetts earlier this summer, and immediately we’re in Canada for this part, where some of the intrigue is the political turmoil between the two countries that led to some different challenges this go around in the 74th year that this event has been taking place.
The time-honored tradition crosses borders and generations, but tensions between Ottawa and Washington spilled over into the annual event.
The International Dory Races are taking place this weekend in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, where the mayor tells NBC10 Boston that any political turmoil didn’t wind up being a distraction at all.
“It isn’t political,” Mayor Jamie Myra said. “This is about two countries getting together for a little fun dory racing, and there will be a winner at the end of the day tomorrow.”
NBC10 Boston will have more coverage throughout the weekend of this event.
