Julio César Chávez Jr., the son of legendary Mexican boxing icon Julio César Chávez Sr., has been deported from the United States and jailed in Mexico following his arrest by federal agents in Los Angeles last month.
Chávez Jr. was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement outside his Studio City home in July, just days after losing a high-profile fight to influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Officials said his arrest was tied to an outstanding warrant in Mexico connected to an ongoing investigation into links with the Sinaloa drug cartel.
On Monday, Mexican authorities confirmed Chávez Jr. was transferred from a border checkpoint into police custody and is today being held in Sonora. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the case during a press conference, stating that an arrest warrant had been issued against him in 2023, tied to an investigation that began years earlier.
The Department of Homeland Security revealed that Chávez Jr. entered the U.S. in August 2023 on a temporary tourist visa, later applying for permanent residency based on his marriage to a U.S. citizen. That marriage, officials allege, came with ties to the Sinaloa Cartel through his wife’s previous relationship with a son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. DHS accused Chávez Jr. of making fraudulent claims on his immigration application and labeled him an “egregious public safety threat.” By June, officials deemed him removable from the United States.
