Such words of wisdom seem like a poetic moment combining a warm embrace and inspiration. Because, the actress turned director offered another very personal account from her childhood-a story that she still holds dearly and acts upon to this day-and that sort of soul-baring honesty could very well be a healing agent for the ills of the world today.

The “We got this” anthem from Kim was planted in a little vulnerable and raw video describing her tangential feelings of nervousness and self-doubt. She takes us all the way back to the moments the cute little shorty was standing tall for the Miss Butterworth syrup commercial opportunity. She was nervous, feeling out of place, and her mom saw it. She made Kim go into the bathroom, where she gave what could be considered some sort of legendary advice, which has been with Kim throughout her entire life: “Don’t let anybody intimidate you, don’t let anything intimidate you. You’re doing that to yourself, no one is doing that to you.”
The real discount: Kim says she STILL does this in the grown world. In situations when she’s feeling terrified about an upcoming meeting, an appearance, or just life in general, she takes herself off to the bathroom for hardcore training, breathing, and resetting time, reminding herself, “I’m here for a reason and what’s for me is for me.” That’s pretty fly.
She even called it a little framework anyone could use-today-while industries are beyond in flux, and few really have a grasp on what is actually going on. Some of them are embracing the change, opening new companies, or just heading off to a deserved vacation. Others, though, are still in shock: An overwhelmed more. The bare-bones message from Kim is: Leave for a few minutes. It might seem a little weird, all things considered, at work, but go ahead, go to a restroom, gather yourself along with your thoughts, and remember-you got this. And, of course, it worked for her back in the day. She booked that commercial!
Responses flooded in, with some awfully touching ones. Many fully identified with what she said. One user stated, “I will use this in my own life. So easy to sabotage big opportunities out of fear.” That hits different. How many times has a great thing happened to us, and then we talked ourselves out of it?
Another follower reminisced, “I remember you in that commercial, singing a song to Michael Jackson. We salute you.” That’s some deep nostalgia right there-however, it’s nice to learn that folks are still reminiscing about her earliest performances.
Yet in exquisite time, the best and most emotional response came from somebody who said that message was for him right when he needed it. They wrote, “OH MY GOODNESS This was so on time. I literally just prayed over a tough afternoon and God led me to your message. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I NEEDED THIS AND YOUR MESSAGE WAS FOR ME.” Chills. A real, beautiful story doing some serious work.
Kim’s glories are not some cheesy motivation. They are a viable working tool that has been put into real use. She has grown up in this nit-picking-from-kid-world-of-pressure; she has had to endure pigeonholing from acting on “Facts of Life” to directing TV episodes. She knows that pressure. She knows the inner doubts. And she gave out this gritty little strategy to get through it.
Kim’s would-be opposite advice, amid a world shrieking from the mountaintops that we have to hustle harder and do more, is a whisper: Stop and breathe. Give yourself grace, remember that you are exactly where you are supposed to be, and what’s meant for you will never miss on coming. That isn’t to say your feelings aren’t valid-it’s acknowledging them to not allow them to govern you.
So next time you’re feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders, you may wish to follow Kim Fields’s lead: Find some excuse, find some demographic for the me-time, this is so hard to describe, that she used to say-“What’s for me is for me.” And yeah, you got this. We all do.
