
Kristin Chenoweth is speaking out in response to the backlash for the comment that she made about Charlie Kirk after his murder last week.
The Tony-winning actress sparked controversy when she said she was “so upset” over Charlie‘s death and noted that she “didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives.”
As a longtime advocate of the LGBTQ+ community and a supporter of Democratic politicians, fans questioned what perspectives of Charlie‘s she sometimes agreed with. Many people in the Broadway community have expressed distaste over her comments, especially with her return to Broadway coming just one month from today.
Kristin addressed the comments in a new interview with NY1 theater correspondent Frank DiLella.

“Your post [about Charlie Kirk] was met with mixed reactions,” Frank noted. Kristin jokingly responded, “Mixed? You’re being kind.”

He continued, “You have a big LGBTQ+ fan base. You know, for members and allies in the LGBTQ+ community, Charlie was a controversial figure. He openly opposed same-sex marriage, trans rights. So I ask, what were you hoping to convey with that post?”
She then got emotional, “I’m sorry if emotion gets involved here, forgive me.”
“I saw what happened online with my own eyes and I had a human moment of reflection right then,” Kristin said. “I came to understand that my comment hurt some folks and that hurt me so badly. I would never. It’s no secret that I’m a Christian, that I’m a person of faith. It’s also no secret that I am an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and for some, that doesn’t go together. But for me, it always has and it always will.”
