Friends and family gathered Saturday night in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, to remember the pregnant teenager who was allegedly killed by her boyfriend.
There was a candle celebration and balloon release at the vigil to honor Kylee Monteiro and her unborn child.
“Kylee Monteiro’s time with us was brief. But her impact will echo for a lifetime,” one speaker told the crowd, who remembered Monteiro as kind, sweet and caring.
Monteiro was 11 weeks pregnant when she was reported missing on Aug. 7. Officials allege that she was killed by Gregory Groom, a 22-year-old she’d been dating. Groom, who called police to report his girlfriend’s disappearance the following day, was arrested last Tuesday after investigators searched his 25-acre property on County Street.
Late that night, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn announced human remains consistent with those of Monteiro had been recovered during a court-authorized search of Groom’s property.
In court Wednesday, prosecutors said Groom admitted to police he had killed Monteiro and told them he buried her in a hole in the woods.
Prosecutors say Gregory Groom admitted stabbing his pregnant girlfriend, 18-year-old Kylee Monteiro, at his property in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Her grief-stricken parents appeared at his first court hearing Wednesday.
People at Saturday night’s vigil said this kind of thing could happen to anybody.
“It’s just such a sad tragic thing to happen to someone,” one woman said. “It’s awful. [Groom] should pay for his consequences.”
“Honestly I hope justice is served because she and her lovely baby honestly does not deserve any of this,” another vigil attendee said.
“It’s so hard to believe that there are people out in the world that can do things like this,” another woman said.
There were both tears and hugs Saturday at the vigil. It was an evening filled with support and community prayer.
Monteiro’s family asked those in attendance to remember the good times they shared with her.
