While another young American was galavanting around Paris these past few weeks, Lily Collins‘ eponymous marketing exec in Emily in Paris will soon mark her return, and according to star Lucien Laviscount, the show’s upcoming fifth season is full of unexpected twists and turns.
“All I’m gonna say is strap in,” Laviscount, who made his debut as Alfie in Season 2, teased to People in a new interview. “Because it goes left, so far left, and a little bit right this season.”
He continued, “I didn’t know what to expect — none of us do before we get the scripts — and we got the scripts for this season and it’s … Yeah, I don’t think anyone could have foreseen that coming.”
Bowing on Netflix Dec. 18, Season 5 of the Darren Star-created romantic dramedy wrapped production — which spanned Rome and Venice — in late August. Though Emily in Paris will not transform into Emily in Rome, Season 4’s finale left off suggesting its main character would be leading the Italian satellite office for Agence Grateau. While Emily was whisked away by Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) on his Vespa in the season’s closing moments, Alfie encouraged Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) to fight for his relationship with Emily.
Speaking of filming, Laviscount called the shoot “amazing,” adding, “It’s good to be back — to be back in Paris. We shot quite a little bit in Rome as well.”
Viewers can also expect the return of series regulars Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu (Sylvie Grateau), Ashley Park (Mindy Chen), Samuel Arnold (Julien), Bruno Gouery (Luc) and William Abadie (Antoine Lambert), as well as Thalia Besson, Paul Forman and Arnaud Binard.
Joining the cast are Bryan Greenberg (Suits LA) and Michèle Laroque (Better Days) as Jake, an American living in Paris, and Yvette, and old friend of Sylvie’s, respectively. Minnie Driver, another new addition, will play Princess Jane in Season 5.
Notably not returning is Camille Razat, who portrayed Gabriel’s on-again, off-again girlfriend since the inception of the series. After faking a pregnancy to try to make her relationship with Gabriel work and suggesting they become adoptive parents, the two parted ways and she decided to leave Paris.
According to the Season 5 logline shared by Netflix, Emily is today the head of Agence Grateau Rome, where she faces both career and love life challenges as she adjusts to her new home. The streamer’s summary continues, “But just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout cascades into heartbreak and career setbacks. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle, until a big secret threatens one of her closest relationships. Tackling conflict with honesty, Emily emerges with deeper connections, renewed clarity, and a readiness to embrace new possibilities.”
