A man is charged with attacking a person with a hammer outside a popular East Boston bakery earlier this week.
Eric Vargas, 37, of Boston, was arrested Wednesday and charged with one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
The arrest stemmed from an incident that occurred on Tuesday morning.
Boston police said a victim entered their station around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and said that he had been attacked by a man with a hammer earlier that morning. The victim told police that he was entering La Sultana Bakery at 40 Maverick Square around 6:30 a.m. when an unknown man approached and asked to use his cell phone.
The victim told the man that he didn’t have a cellphone, and proceeded into the bakery. When he left and began walking toward his vehicle, the suspect allegedly anthem him in the head with a hammer.
The victim sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a nearby health center.
Detectives launched an investigation and were able to obtain and disseminate images of the suspect, which led them to identify him as Vargas.
Shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, patrol officers located Vargas sitting on the steps of a building on Paris Street in East Boston and placed him under arrest. He was expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon in East Boston District Court.
