Adam Fredrick Harrison, 22, allegedly brake checked and performed “stunts” in front of a State Police cruiser before crashing into it on Seaport Road on Saturday afternoon, court records show.
He was released on personal recognizance after his arraignment in South Boston Municipal Court.
Harrison, who was accompanied by a woman, did not speak with a reporter while leaving the courthouse.
He was arrested in South Boston Saturday near the intersection of D and Summer streets while riding a bicycle, court documents show.
The State Trooper who arrested him was swarmed by motorcyclists and bicyclists while he tried to block a ramp to I-93, court documents show.
In a police report, the trooper described a raucous scene with several drivers blocking his cruiser and performing stunts.
“They kept blocking me from passing by placing themselves in front of my cruiser, [brake] checking me, and [performing] stunts like standing on the motorcycle with one foot on the seat,” the trooper wrote. “Other motorcyclists and [bicyclists] recorded the event on their phones.”
The trooper struck the back tire of one motorcycle with the cruiser, before getting out and chasing the operator on foot, he wrote.
The motorcyclist, who had brake-checked the cruiser, hopped onto the back of another motorcycle and sped away, the report said.
The motorcycle left behind was determined to be be stolen, police said.
While chasing the motorcyclist, the trooper spotted Harrison riding his bicycle nearby. He recognized him as one of the riders who had done stunts in front of the cruiser, he wrote.
The trooper ran after Harrison, grabbed his shirt and knocked him off balance. Harrison was handcuffed on the ground, he wrote.
The incident started around 2 p.m. Saturday, when about 100 people on bicycles, dirt bikes, and motorized scooters went on the Zakim Bridge and into the O’Neill Tunnel, leaving the highway at the Government Center exit, according to State Police.
The riders returned in large numbers a short time later and eventually made their way into South Boston, where the crash and Harrison’s arrest took place.
The state Department of Transportation refused to release video of the bikers traveling through the tunnel, citing an ongoing investigation by State Police. Videos of the riders going through the tunnel have been circulating on social media.
