Matt James, who got his fame through the popular show The Bachelor, stated just recently his best 5 Chicago Pizzerias-and, well, let’s just say opinions have thoughts. Our bachelor star said, bit of passion, bit of gastronomy. Some agreed, but many were ready to throw down in arguments of glaring omissions.

Kicking off his list in fine style, James placed Bungalow by Middlebrow at number one. He praised the pizzas so highly that he could not refrain from also expressing his delight for their self-serve soft-serve ice cream. “Not only was this my favorite pizza I had, but you also can finish your meal with self-serve, soft-serve ice cream,” James said on the video. Laughter: one fan asked could it really be such a good idea to give customers free access to the soft-serve ice cream machine; James said, “Exactly! That’s what I’m saying, YES!”
Then busted out: Pizza Amichi, a place that started out in someone’s apartment before making it big. James called it, “one of my favorite stops.” He also praised their tavern-style pies. For deep-dish, he went for Burps Place, a favorite spot of the late Anthony Bourdain. “It didn’t feel right eating pizza with a fork and knife, but you gotta do what you gotta do,” he admitted.
Dicey’s Tavern made the list for its “fire” tavern-style pizzas, house-made tater tots, and ranch. Last was Pizza Lobo, which James put “mostly for the vibes,” as it has an outdoor patio with a fire pit.
But surprise: this was when things took a downward turn. The comment section became a civilized inferno regarding all matters pizza. There were quite some people who were outright mad because Pequod’s, an institution in Chicago, was left off. “Pequod’s is the beeeeeest in Chicago,” one guy ruefully said.
Others threw out favorites such as Zazas and Vito and Nick’s and Spacca Napoli, with Deuce-one responding: “No Spacca Napoli is atrocious lmao.”
Chicagoans almost refused the existence of half these places. “I’m from Chicago n I never heard of none of these tourist spots,” one said. Oops.
A high was when one commenter said, “The way he attacked that ice cream isn’t getting enough discussion.” And really, that was a fair point.
Ultimately, when it comes to pizza, every choice wins. This one list definitely started the chatter. Are you in or are you out? One thing to say for sure is that there are a lot of opinions on Chicago pizza. So if you’re ever in the Windy City, perhaps you should check out a few of James’ picks for yourself. Oh, and don’t forget the soft-serve!
