Ryan Murphy is once again highlighting a new true crime story with his Netflix series Monster, and the upcoming season will break down the crimes of serial killer Ed Gein. As fans anticipate the news series, people are likely wondering who Gein was, what his crimes were and details about the upcoming show.
Who Was Ed Gein?
Gein, who was known as the “Butcher of Plainfield,” was a serial killer who became infamous for skinning human corpses in the 1950s, according to History.com.
Police found the headless, gutted body of missing store clerk Bernice Worden at Gein’s farmhouse in November 1957, which launched an investigation into his crimes. Investigators ultimately discovered a collection of human skulls, as well as furniture and clothing that were made from human body parts and skin.
According to History.com, Gein told police he dug up the graves of women who had recently been buried that reminded him of his mother. The remains of 10 women were found in Gein’s home, though he was only linked to the murders of Worden and another local woman named Mary Hogan.

Gein was sent to a state hospital in Wisconsin after he was declared mentally unfit to stand trial, according to History.com. He was eventually deemed sane enough to stand trial in 1968, and a judge found him guilty on one count of first-degree murder by reason of insanity.
EBSCO reported that Gein admitted to killing both Worden and Hogan, though he was only tried for the murder of Worden.
He spent the rest of his life in a state facility before his death in 1984 at the age of 77 following his battle with cancer.
