EXCLUSIVE: Stoic has boarded sales ahead of the American Film Market on gangland crime pic Moses the Black, starring Omar Epps (Power Book III: Raising Kanan), rappers Wiz Khalifa and Quavo, and Chukwudi Iwuji (The Day Of The Jackal). Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and his G-Unit Film and Television are aboard as executive producers.
The story about a gangster in modern day Chicago is inspired by the repentance story of the fifth-century saint of the same name. Epps plays Chicago gang leader and lead character Malik, with Khalifa as 2wo-3ree, the confident and volatile leader of Malik’s young crew. It marks the Grammy nominated rapper’s second movie role and his first as one of the leads. Quavo plays Straw, Malik’s arch-nemesis. The title character, St. Moses the Black, is played by Iwuji. Principal photography wrapped earlier this month in Chicago.
Yelena Popovic (Man of God) is writer-director. Producers include Alexandros Potter and Popovic for Simeon Faith. Khalifa is executive-producing through his Taylor Gang Films, while Epps is also serving as an executive producer through his production company BrooklynWorks Films.
Simeon Faith financed the film alongside the Nick Mirkopoulos Cinematic Fund, backed by the former owners of Cinespace Film Studios—the Pissios family of Chicago and the Mirkopoulos family of Toronto—who also serve as executive producers on the film.
Stoic will launch worldwide sales on the film and will unveil first-look footage at the upcoming American Film Market. The offer for worldwide sales rights was negotiated by Nat McCormick of Stoic and Alexandros Potter, Principal of Simeon Faith.
McCormick said: “We’re thrilled to present this powerful, star-driven film that unites acclaimed actors and global beat stars in a story that will resonate with audiences worldwide. Its emotional depth and dynamic soundtrack make Moses the Black a truly standout title for the market.”
Stoic’s slate includes Carousel, starring Chris Pine and Jenny Slate, The Midnight Pool starring Aaron Paul, and Miami Nights, starring Terrence Howard, Jeremy Piven, Thomas Jane, and Jeremy Sumpter.
