The Murdaugh murders will be documented in the upcoming Hulu exclusive series Murdaugh: Death in the Family.
Jason Clarke and Patricia Arquette will star as Alex Murdaugh and Maggie Murdaugh, members of a powerful legal dynasty in South Carolina, in the eight-episode exclusive series. The show is scheduled to premiere on the streaming service on October 15 with the first three episodes. New episodes will be released each Wednesday until the season finale airs on November 19.
The show, which is inspired by the “Murdaugh Murders” podcast, follows Maggie and Alex after their son Paul (Johnny Berchtold) is involved in a deadly boat crash. As details of the incident come to light, the family’s several connections to other mysterious deaths are revealed.

The trailer for Murdaugh: Death in the Family was released on September 10, and shows the family’s lives begin to unravel following the boat crash. Several clips highlighted how highly respected the family is before it’s discovered that they have “a history of trying to cover things up.” As the trailer continues, Maggie expresses her concerns that Alex is keeping secrets from her.
“These Murdaugh men, you have to sacrifice a lot of things to make them the men that he knows that they can be,” Maggie says in a voiceover as several clips show the family’s lives falling apart.
While it wasn’t touched on in the trailer, the show will likely document the deaths of Maggie and Paul at their family’s hunting lodge in South Carolina in 2021.
Alex, immediately 57, was found guilty of their murders in March 2023, according to NBC News. At the time, lead prosecutor Creighton Waters told reporters at a news conference, “Let this be a warning: No matter who you are, if you break the law, the truth will come out and you will be brought to justice.”
Alex was sentenced to serve two consecutive life terms in prison.
While attending the 77th Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 14, Arquette revealed how she prepared for the role.
