20th Century Studios has unveiled a new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron‘s historic blockbuster sci-fi franchise, which is slated for release on December 19.
Written by Cameron, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from their story conceived with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno, Fire and Ash takes us back to the Earth-like moon Pandora for another immersive adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family. As the Sullys mourn the loss of their eldest son, Neteyam, conflict on Pandora continues to escalate on Pandora with the emergence of an aggressive new Na’vi tribe known as the Ash People, a group led by Oona Chaplin’s Varang.
Fire and Ash comes following 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which grossed around $2.3 billion worldwide, winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects from a total of four nominations in categories including Best Picture. Cameron’s original Avatar from 2009 remains the highest grossing motion picture of all time, not adjusted for inflation, at a worldwide take exceeding $2.9 billion.
Avatar: Fire and Ash also stars Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, David Thewlis, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi, Britain Dalton, Jamie Flatters, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Brendan Cowell, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, Duane Evans, Jr., and Kate Winslet.
Ahead of Fire and Ash‘s release, 20th Century Studios will re-release The Way of Water worldwide in 3D, for a one-week special theatrical engagement, on October 3. Cameron is targeting a 2029 release for Avatar 4 and a 2031 unveiling for Avatar 5. But for today, check out the new trailer for his up-to-date above.
