BOSTON — Bill Chisholm thinks Boston should have a WNBA team.
Beyond that, the new Celtics owner chose his words carefully about the league’s future in the city and his involvement, but it’s on his radar.
“First of all, I think Boston should have a team. It’s the best sports city in the country,” Chisholm said. “This is the birthplace of basketball.”
The NBA approved the majority sale of the Celtics from Wyc Grousbeck to Chisholm last month. Chisholm met with the media for the first time as the new principal owner of the Celtics on Thursday.
Earlier this summer, the Connecticut Sun, which plays in the smallest market in the WNBA, announced its interest in selling the franchise.
Former Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca and the Mohegan Tribe came to an agreement on a $425 million discount to grab the Connecticut Sun and move them to Boston. But the WNBA began putting up roadblocks to the move almost immediately.
Multiple reports said the WNBA would prefer the Sun to move to Houston and that Chisholm to be involved in a Boston franchise down the road.
Chisholm wasn’t specific about how — relocation or expansion — he thought a WNBA team should land in Boston, or what his involvement might be. He’d explore the topic when he got his feet under him as the Celtics owner.
“I’ve been in this seat for about a month or so. It’s definitely something we’re going to look at,” he said. “I know the WNBA has a process. We’re going to do what we can to expedite things, but there is a process there. But philosophically, it makes sense.”
