BOSTON – Three Terriers picked up their first collegiate goals as the No. 3 Boston University men’s ice hockey team downed Colgate, 6-2, on Friday night at Agganis Arena.
The Terreirs (2-0-0, 0-0-0 HE) and Colgate (0-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) remained scoreless until the final minute of the first period, when sophomore Cole Hutson broke through at 19:07, before the Terriers added a trio of goals in the middle frame. Junior Mick Frechette and freshman Ryder Ritchie recorded their first collegiate goals, and sophomore Cole Eiserman added a power-play tally.
Colgate got on the board at 10:53 in that frame, but then Eiserman answered back on the man advantage at 8:51 of the final period. The Raiders pocketed another goal at 15:44 before freshman Jonathan Morello notched his first goal as a Terrier at 16:33 — an empty-netter on the penalty kill.
Freshman Conrad Fondrk picked up an assist in his first game in the BU sweater on Hutson’s goal. Sophomore Kamil Bednarik and Hutson notched two assists a piece. Morello, Eiserman, Ritchie, senior Owen McLaughlin, and freshman John McNelis all recorded a helper as well.
Sophomore goaltender Mikhail Yegorov stopped 24 of 26 shots faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- One of BU’s best chances of the opening period came at 11:30 after junior Jack Harvey forced a Colgate turnover and started a 2-on-1 with sophomore Sascha Boumedienne. The defender’s shot was denied by Reid Dyck (30 saves); Fondrk fired the rubber back on net moments later, which was also stopped.
- At the other end of the ice, Yegorov held down the fort, including a highlight-reel, behind-the-back glove cut with 2:26 remaining.
- Hutson opened the scoring for the Terriers at 19:07. The reigning Hockey East Co-Player of the Week started his dissent from the offensive blue line, closing in and evading three defenders, before floating the puck into the back of the net on his backhand.
- Yegorov turned away all 11 shots faced in the first period.
- BU doubled its lead to 2-0 to open the middle frame. Morello fired the initial shot on net, but Frechette picked up the loose change to record his first collegiate goal at 5:10.
- The Scarlet and White notched a third goal at 7:03 on a give-and-go from Ritchie and McLaughlin. After a Colgate turnover, the puck landed on Eiserman’s tape, and the trio quickly began a 3-on-2 the other way. With help from McLaughlin’s setup, Ritchie had a backhand finish to record his first collegiate goal.
- Eiserman tacked on the Terriers’ fourth goal on the power-play at 9:21 to make it a 4-0 contest. Hutson sent the puck to Eiserman in the right circle, who wasted no time getting the one-timer off his stick.
- The Raiders got on the board at 10:53 of the second period.
- Midway through the final frame, BU’s man advantage struck once more to bring the score to 5-1 at 8:51. Hutson carried the puck into the Terries’ offensive zone and dumped it around to Ritchie. The rubber took a wacky bounce off the glass and landed in front of the opposing net, and Ritchie set up an Eiserman one-timer in the slot.
- Colgate scored its second and final goal on the power play at 15:44 before Morello blocked a shot on the penalty kill and converted on the empty net to bring the final score to 6-2.
