In the early 1980s, Richard Dalton became Princess Diana‘s personal hairstylist, although they first met in his London salon when she was just 17 years old. Elated about the assignment he received (even he cannot understand how it happened), the hairdresser stayed by the People’s Princess’s side for a decade, styling her hair even twice in the same day.
Dalton retraces those years in his memoir It’s All About the Hair: My Decade With Diana, sharing with readers a wealth of anecdotes and trivia from his time caring for Diana’s hair (and, often, William and Harry‘s as well). In an interview with Marie Claire, Dalton also made it known that the British princess preferred to do her own makeup rather than rely on makeup artists.
Dalton confirmed that, “unless she had to take an official portrait or something like that, Princess Diana preferred to do her own makeup. If it was a photo shoot or official photos with Charles or the boys, then yes, there was a makeup musician. Otherwise, she would do her own makeup.”
Dalton then pointed out that the princess, “really had no need for makeup. Her skin was just flawless,” the hairstylist commented. “In person, she was incredibly beautiful, much more beautiful than she might have appeared in photos. She didn’t need foundation at all, because her skin was flawless on its own. A true English rose.”
As for her signature make-up, it is impossible not to think of the sky-blue pencil with which Diana loved to emphasize her sky-blue irises. Then lots of mascara and lipsticks more orange and pinkish rather than red, with a preferably glossy finish.
