We have a somewhat chilly August day on tap today. Heavy clouds, cool breezes, and a few showers will combine to bring us highs in the upper 50s (!) and low 60s. If it sounds sinister for late summer, it is. Thankfully it’s only for a day. Tomorrow we bounce back to the upper 60s to around 70.

Rain today – how much?
Back to the shower thing. How much rain is coming? That’s the big question of the day, and it seems that the trend is for less and less.

We’re seeing the best chance for a soaking in Connecticut and Rhode Island, with somewhat beneficial showers from the South Shore (think Duxbury south) and then back to Worcester, Massachusetts.

North of that imaginary line, the rain will be a disappointment. Just enough to keep the dust down, but not enough to make a difference in the drought.
Hurricane Erin impacts here
Thereafter, our focus is on the impacts of Hurricane Erin.
While not the powerhouse that it was, Erin will still bring strong winds to the Cape/Islands late Thursday night into Friday morning. Some gusts may be as high as 50 mph on the outer Cape and Nantucket.

How does this happen with a track far offshore?
As tropical systems move north, their wind field expands. In addition, beach erosion, minor coastal flooding, high surf (with attendant rip currents), and rough ferry service (if at all) will be the norm through the end of the week. And that’s not just on the Cape/Islands.

All along the coast we should see stiff winds and rough waves.
Winds peak early Friday, the drop off significantly by Friday night. Seas will ease by Saturday but remain choppy through Sunday (and perhaps Monday).

We’ll keep you in the loop over the next few days as Erin sweeps out over the Atlantic.
