About the illegal betting apps case
The ED booked up to 29 movie stars, YouTubers, and influencers for allegedly endorsing illegal betting applications. The scheme also named actors Prakash Raj, Lakshmi Manchu, Vijay Deverakonda, and others in addition to Rana.
The investigation started, according to News18, after businessman Phanindra Sharma complained that these well-known celebrities were endorsing these betting apps, luring young, gullible people to put their hard-earned money into the scam, and then leaving them in financial trouble.
The Cyberabad Police subsequently filed a formal complaint against the celebrities on March 19 of this year.
Following the filing of the FIR, Rana claimed via his team that he had followed with all legal requirements when using the applications.
Actor Vijay Deverakonda was also spotted attending the ED headquarters a few days back after being called.
The matter is being investigated under many statutes pertaining to online deceit and fraudulent behaviour, such as Sections 66-D of the IT Act, Section 4 of the Telangana State Gaming Act, and Sections 318(4) and 112 read with Section 49 of the Bharat Nyay Sanhita.
