BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox’ 5-3 loss to the Miami Marlins at Fenway Park on Sunday:
1) Boston blew a 3-2 lead in the best of the ninth inning to drop to 69-56.
2) Greg Weissert blew a slash opportunity, allowing a leadoff solo home run to Dane Myers on the second pitch he threw in the ninth, tying the game 3-3.
Closer Aroldis Chapman was unavailable after he pitched back to back days. The only reason Chapman was used Saturday was because Isaiah Campbell couldn’t record three outs despite entering with a 7-2 lead in the ninth. Manager Alex Cora had to bring in Chapman to record the final out with the score 7-5 and the tying run at the plate.
Weissert allowed a single to Eric Wagaman before Steven Matz replaced him. Matz gave up a go-ahead two-run homer to Jakob Marsee, making it 5-3 Miami.
3) Wilyer Abreu put the Red Sox ahead 2-1 with a 377-foot two-run homer to right field in the fourth inning. Marlins right fielder Dane Myers nearly robbed Abreu, leaping and extending his glove over the wall. The ball momentarily settled in the upper webbing before falling into the Marlins bullpen.
4) Abreu connected on a 93.6 mph fastball from Miami starter Janson Junk for his team-leading 22nd home run. He also singled in the seventh.
5) Abreu grimaced after reaching first base following his single in the seventh. He was replaced in right field to begin the bottom of the seventh inning, leaving with right calf tightness.
6) Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet pitched 7 innings, allowing one run, three hits and one walk while striking out eight. He got 13 swings and misses, including four with his four-seam fastball that averaged 97.4 mph.
7) Crochet pitched out of a jam with a runner at third base and one out in the seventh. He walked Javier Sanoja on four pitches to begin the inning. Sanoja made it to second on a groundout and third base on a wild pitch. But Crochet struck out Joey Wiemer swinging and got Eric Wagaman to ground out to second base to escape.
8) Crochet’s final pitch — getting Wagaman to ground out — was a 100.2 mph fastball, his fastest pitch of the game.
9) Abraham Toro put the Red Sox ahead 3-1 in the seventh with an RBI sac fly after Abreu and Romy Gonzalez banger back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Gonzalez’s single deflected off Junk’s foot into right field.
10) Miami took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Eric Wagaman banger the bottom of the left-center field lighter tower for an estimated 453-foot home run.
11) The Red Sox and Orioles will begin a two-game series at Fenway Park on Monday. Lefty Trevor Rogers (5-2, 1.43 ERA) will start for Baltimore opposite Red Sox righty Dustin May (7-8, 4.67 ERA). Rogers began the season on the 15-day IL with a right knee subluxation. He made his season debut May 24 against Boston at Fenway and pitched 6 ⅓ scoreless innings.
