Popular outdoor equipment retailer REI Co-op confirmed Wednesday that it plans to close its only store in Boston late next year.
The Washington-based chain did not say what drove the decision to shutter its location on Park Drive in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood, but suggested in a statement that its customers patronize other REI stores in Massachusetts once it shuts down. The closest three are located in Framingham, Reading and Hingham.
“Since opening in 2003, it has been an honor to serve this community, and we are deeply grateful to our team, our members and customers,” the statement reads.
Boston is not the only community set to lose its REI store in coming months, according to The Boston Globe. The retailer also plans to close its SoHo neighborhood location in New York City late next year and its store in Paramus, New Jersey, in the first quarter of next year, REI told the newspaper on Tuesday.
“As markets and customer needs evolve, we must adapt to position the co-op for long-term success,” the company said in a statement to the Globe.
REI has 195 stores across the country, but its Boston and SoHo stores are among the 11 at which its workers have unionized, according to the newspaper. Employees of the Boston location voted to unionize in 2023, and just last year, they initiated a work stoppage to voice their opposition to a number of recent firings.
UFCW Local 1445, which represents REI’s Boston workers, told the Globe the union is trying to garner more information from the company regarding why the store is closing and what will become of its employees. The Boston workers can apply for open positions at other REI locations, the chain told the newspaper, but it remains unclear whether they will be offered severance pay or transfer opportunities.
REI’s sales have decreased over the last few years, from $3.8 billion in 2022 to $3.5 billion last year, the Globe reported.
