During an interview on MSNBC’s The Weekend, the veteran actor described Trump as someone with no sense of empathy or humanity.
“Trump does not understand anything about humanity, people,” De Niro said. “He has no empathy. I don’t know where, what he is, but he’s an alien, and he wants to hurt this country.”
De Niro continued his emotional takedown, suggesting Trump’s behavior is rooted in something far more disturbing.
“It’s something deeply psychological in him, he wants to hurt people,” the actor said. “He wants to hurt this country, doesn’t care.”
The comments came just one day after De Niro appeared at “No Kings Day,” a political event meant to highlight threats to American democracy.
The White House fired back quickly. Communications director Steven Cheung told The Hill on Monday that De Niro is “washed up” and “hasn’t been relevant in 30 years.” Cheung went even further, accusing the actor of “spewing hate speech and inciting violence against others.”
De Niro has long been one of Hollywood’s most vocal Trump critics, publicly denouncing him since his 2016 campaign. Over the years, he has used his platform to encourage political participation and push for Democratic candidates. Last year, De Niro threw his support behind former Vice President Kamala Harris, encouraging fans to back her during a Philadelphia Eagles tailgate event.
