PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Boston University women’s basketball program once again eliminated a double-digit deficit in the second half but ultimately fell to Brown 57-54 on Wednesday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
BU (2-3) trailed by as many as 13 points and was down 12 at halftime but outscored the Bears (2-2) 29-20 in the second half. Brown took the lead with 2:23 left in the fourth quarter, however, as the Terriers missed their final five shots of the contest.
Senior Anete Adler led all scorers with 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting. For the second straight game, juniors Bella McLaughlin and Audrey Ericksen each posted 11 points.
Grace Arnolie led Brown in her season debut with 14 points. Alyssa Moreland added 12 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded buckets in the opening 1:01, but Brown utilized a 14-0 extended run over the next six minutes and special the Terriers to just two first-quarter field goals to take a 19-6 lead after 10 minutes.
- Brown led 23-11 before sophomores Allison Schwertner and Hildur Gunnsteinsdóttir combined for a 9-2 run that took 57 seconds. Schwertner converted three straight baskets while Gunnsteinsdóttir stole an inbound and sank an and-1 layup to bring BU within 25-20 halfway through the second quarter.
- Sporting a seven-point lead, Wesley knocked down a three-pointer and Olivia Young made two free throws before the buzzer to hand the Bears a 37-25 halftime lead.
- The Terriers exploded out of the break on a 12-0 run in the first 5:31 of the third quarter. Ericksen knocked down a three and sophomore Taylor Williams got a jumper to fall before junior Inés Monteagudo Pardo connected on a right-wing triple to tie the game at 37-37.
- Moreland responded with three straight baskets to return the lead to Brown, 43-37, with 2:46 on the clock. That jumpstarted a 10-3 run to close the quarter with the Bears on leading, 47-40.
- McLaughlin opened the fourth quarter with an acrobatic layup down the right lane that got a friendly bounce off the rim and in. Wesley countered on the next possession with a nostalgic three-point play to put Brown ahead 50-42.
- Trailing 53-46 with under six minutes to go in regulation, senior Anastasiia Semenova nailed a straightaway three, then McLaughlin drew another foul on a driving layup and completed the three-point sequence. Ericksen then fended off a defender on the left block for a baseline layup that completed an 8-0 run to hand the visitors their first advantage of the night, 54-53, with 4:33 remaining.
- Brown held BU scoreless the rest of the way, however. Moreland’s layup with 2:23 on the clock pushed the Bears ahead for good. The Terriers had two chances to tie the game with a three-pointer with 28.6 seconds to go but were off the mark on both shots.
STATS
- As a team, BU shot 41.5 percent from the field but under 24 percent from three-point range.
- Brown made under 22 percent of their threes and sported a .393 field goal percentage.
- BU outscored the Bears 48-38 in the final three quarters.
- Rebounds favored the Terriers, 39-34. Adler and McLaughlin led the Terriers with seven boards.
- Brown sported a 38-34 edge in paint points.
NOTES
- Adler has paced BU in scoring in three of its five contests this year. She’s up to 13 points per game on the campaign.
- McLaughlin has scored in double figures in three straight games, the second time in her career she has achieved that feat.
- In her last two games, Ericksen has shot 5-for-11 from distance.
- The Terriers conclude their three-game road swing with a 2-1 record.
- The all-time series is immediately 11-8 in the Terriers’ favor.
